OUR FIRST LOOK AT TIM BURTON'S ALICE IN WONDERLAND!

Tim Burton is hard at work filming his next opus, a screen adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic story Alice in Wonderland.
Currently shooting in Cornwall, England, the part of Alice will be played by a young Australian actress by the name of Mia Wasikowska. The movie will be a mix of live action and CGI and star Burton's favorite muse Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter-too perfect!
Also on set with the actors were Burton's wife Helena Bonham Carter and their baby daughter (still unnamed) who appears to be dressed up as an extra in the film.
I'm so excited for this, the set and the costumes look amazing! Unfortunately though we have a bit of a wait, Alice in Wonderland is expected for 2010. Guess for now I'll have be satisfied with the cartoon or just listen to "White Rabbit" on repeat.

Just an FYI...Lewis Carroll is a pen name. Alice in Wonderland was written by Charles Ludwig Dodge. All you people correcting others about the book should probably know that.
My word, do people ever do any kind of research anymore? Yes, Henry Selik directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, but a lot of the visionary elements were talked over with Tim Burton and he was frequently consulted. Burton had been wanting to do a film adaptation of his original story for awhile. Since he was busy with Batman before Nightmare had a script, he couldn't do it all himself. He picked Selik to direct it because they share a similar style and vision and Burton trusted Selik not to muck up his work. Oh, and it was Burton's story to begin with. Now, don't get me wrong - Selik is amazing. What he did with Nightmare helped make it very popular (Selik's Slow Bob in the Lower Dimensions is really amazing...too bad he never continued with it). But just because someone else directed a Burton film does not mean it was not Burton's. Hence the name "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas". But, I'm pretty sure we are all here to discuss the current Burton film, not gripe about films past.
Going back to the research comment I made earlier, people should really think before they comment, unless they really know what they are talking about. Burton is doing an adaptation of Lewis Carroll's novels Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. It is rumored that this movie will focus on Alice returning to Wonderland when she is older, hence the older actress being cast as Alice. Since the film is in production, a lot of things can change. I've seen a picture or two of Depp's Mad Hatter. The make-up is a little drag queen-esque, but that may very well change (seeing as the movie is in production and everything is being worked on). Other than the make-up, I really liked the costume - it fit the style of the original illustrations form the novel well, as does the costuming in the above pictures, but I cannot make an accurate judgment because I have yet to see any film/acting clips. The make-up may not even be a problem, because, as sources say, all the Wonderland scenes will be motion captured and CGI'ed over (think Beowulf). I am going to be reasonable and declare that, before I make any sort of judgment as to the film's quality, I must learn more about it and see some footage. Until then, my hopes are high, and I will continue to look into the production of this.
he makes the worst films ever. ruining another classic. only film i liked that had anything to do with him was nightmare before christmas which he didnt even direct. all credit went to him and not selick. how about he uses some other actors aswell.
tim burton always makes wonderful films and i trust that alice is going to be great. big ups to my two favorite hollywood stars. JOHNNY & TIM. :D
The character playing Alice is only 18 years old actually...
This movie is going to be AMAZING! Even Anne Hathaway got in as one of the queens
Onde estão as fotos do Johnny Depp?!
oh, wouldnt you know, in the own words of neil, he sent the script to both henry and tim, tim was busy, henry got on board as soon as the script arrived.
OMG If Tim Burton does a great job... he needs to tackle the The Wonderful World of Oz and do the sequels!!!!
I smell Alan Rickman as the wizard! johnny depp as the scarecrow!
cant wait for this movie!!!
ALICE IN WONDERLAND BY TIM BURTON IS AWESOME...NOW ALL TIM BURTON NEEDS TO REMAKE IS A DARK AND CREEPY WIZARD OF OZ!!!!
i think that the actress who plays alice's character is old!
what a pitty !
Tim Burton making Alice in Wonderland so Awesome.
Now we need Tarantino to Remake Battle Royale and I will be very happy =).
I've always fantasized about making my own film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, and I never could decide who would be best at playing the caterpillar. Alan Rickman is perfect! I can't believe he had never occured to me, but I guess that's why Tim Burton is making movies and I'm . . .well, not. But of course, Johnny Depp was the first and only person that ever came to mind for the Mad Hatter. I actually thought of Donald Sutherland as the White Rabbit for some reason. I think he could pull off the neurotic, fidgety vibe the rabbit gives off.
I am so excited! Tim Burton is a genius... and my hero!
This is going to be a wonderful movie. And to make it better there is a rock star cast! Alan Rickman, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anne Hathaway... this is going to be AMAZING!
All of you who don't think so need to stay quite though... don't ruin it for the rest of us.
who has time to read all that shit. this movie is going to be bad ass.
I can't believe that anyone would even have any doubts in their mind that tim burton wouldn't do this justice. and I absolutely love that he uses them together all the time. Have you ever seen a movie with that combination that was bad????!!!! NO!! I only wish it was coming out sooner cause I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
I am so excited! helena bonham carter is the cooooooolest person alive and johnny depp is incredible and tim buton is a LEDGEND!! I am so excited!! This is gonna be an AWESOME FILM. It will be difficult to top sweeney todd but they will do it :D AAAAHH :)
I'm so excited!!!! I love helena!!!!!!!!! ANd tim!! and johnny! Theyr'e all so good together
Everyone shut up, k?
Tim Burton is a LEGEND!!
and Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny depp are AWEEEESOMMMEEE!!!
I can't WAIT for this film :D
Am looking forward to this film - great casting and great locations - hope it offers something different from all the other alice films.

You're all crazy. This is not a remake--it's a sequel.
It's like the old saying goes... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Why not marvel in yet another burton/depp masterpiece. It works, and you can rest assured the results are going to be incredible.
to all the folks complaining because Tim is always using Helena, Johnny and even Danny in his films. so what. the critics and the box office point to it being a good team. and that's the real issue in this business. yep that's right, moviemaking might be artistic but it is still a business.
personally I love the combination. rarely has anything not be entertaining at least
Please don't disappoint me Mr. Burton. I love Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter but could you recycle them any more?
Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite stories, so please do justice to it.
I can't believe the nerve of some people! Tim Burton truly is a cinematic genius! The movies has made are nothing less than wonderful! He i creative, innovative & just a sheer genius! He just has a way of making a story really come alive. Everything he does with Johnny Deep is nothing less than breathtaking! He is wonderful, I wouldn't trust anyone but Burton to make this film. & with a wonderful cast this movie will be AMAZING!
WHAT'S WRONG WITH ALL YOU RETARDS? TIM BURTON'S PERFECT FOR ALICE IN WONDERLAND. HE MAKES DARK CHILDREN FILMS, AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT ALICE IN WONDERLAND ALWAYS WAS MEANT TO BE. I cant wait to see it.
wow, you guys have no idea. Tim Burton is a cinematic GENIUS! his movies like Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice were masterpieces! His adaption of willy wonka was amazing and Alice is going to be nothing less than mind blowing! Tim Burton is the only choice for an Alice remake. I can't wait to see this film!
FUCK TIM BURTON!!!!!!!!!!
Ive got an idea why dont we give the movie to a director who knows what he is doing and can use johnny depp properly...hmmmmm.... who could that be oh yeah Terry Gilliam. I mean he did do Tideland, Fear and Loathing, Brazil, Jabberywocky (Wait where did the poem come from oh yeah Through the Looking Glass) 12 Monkeys, Fisher King, Monty Python and the Holy Grail etc... Someone please kill Tim Burton so we can stop having mediocrity incarnate... You had you run in the 90's so die already like Kurt Cobain... If you would of done that then I could still respect you. But I guess thanks for Ed Wood and Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
Someone explain how Tim Burton and Michael Bay keep making movies. On the one hand explosions and car chases on the other black and white stripes and stop motion. I understand Hollywood wants a buck but come on did anyone even see Planet of the Apes or Sleepy Hollow.
(Whatever happened to Pee Wee's Big Adventure)
I am tired of this art school spielberg taking on timeless pieces and blowing a load of black and white pinstripes all over it. Once a moon I respected old Burton but after Mars Attacks its just a Hot Topic scam. And for all you Timmy fans who need your Nightmare Before Christmas fix know this he didn't direct it! This is why Nightmare went over well but Corpse Bride was a sham. If you want to see a good movie or one with substance like Alice in Wonderland turn no further than Coraline directed by Henry Selick. This piece written by Neil Gaiman oh and Henry Selick directed Nightmare Before Christmas...Funny.
Umm yeah in case no one knew this, the original Alice in Wonderland is a pretty dark book. It doesn't explore the imagination of childhood unfortunately. It explore's a little girl's need for acceptance in her world. And in literature the little girl represents the innocence lost in a world with twists and turns. Hmm maybe all of you saying that Tim Burton is "darkening" or "ruining" Alice in Wonderland should actually do some fucking research on the novel itself. The novel is dark. Carroll (the author for all those dumb fucks out there) was a drug addicted victorian writer who had a pretty dark past of his own. It's like the insanity of the mind trying to be kept away. Oh and there are psychiatric disorders characterized by an Alice in Wonderland complex.
Oh wow Burton is actually dipicting something correctly!!!
WOAH!
All of you that said Burton is destroying this story are naive. And now look like dumbasses. Use your heads.
Okay so I don't really care about all the slander or what-have-you going on but I must say that Lewis Carroll is my favorite children's author and I love ALICE IN WONDERLAND! I hope if this is a great success, Burton should also do the sequel of THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. That would be totally awesome.
And Johnny Depp will be a completely sweet mad Hatter! yeah!
i gotta say, the movie from disney was stupid and the book was cute, not scary. although, it does fit with a darker twist i suppose. i guess i just thoght alice was a bit of a dipstick in both. the cheshire's my favorite anyway, so i hope they make him all...well, him!
I thort of tim burton doin this film years ago
sooo buzzin its actually happening!!!
Graciaaaasss!!
ive always loved the book and im a little afraid for this movie but im also very excited. tim burton will keep the darkness in the movie and not make it so happy and joyful like the disney version, but the disney version it the one that made me like the book even more! i just think it would be better if the movie was animated not with real people because the actress doesnt put of the alice look to me but thats just my opinion.
but then again go for it, i don't really care and doesn't bother me. I am looking foward to this movie. Lucie in the sky with diamonds!
so many hypocrits on here, I guess everyone is but seriously guys you don't sound smart speaking evil and not hearing it.
Well I found the book quite scary if you've actually read the book instead of watching a waste of a movie u would think this also
j'ai vraiment envie de voir le film!!!
helena! jhonny! tim! a dream team!!!
i read alice in wonderland, carrol lewis, tellement j'en peut plus, attendre jusqu'en 2010!!!
mais que faire?
thank you tim burton.
shrooooooooooooms!!!!!!!!!!!11
People, please note that Alice in Wonderland was a BOOK (author is Lewis Carroll) before Disney destroyed, I mean, made a it a movie. Do people read books anymore? I feel like I'm the only one...Also, those of you complaining that Charlie and the Chocolate factory was a lame remake, you're wrong. You can think it lame, but it was not a remake of the "original" movie. It was, in fact, also a book (author is Roald Dahl). Burton did an adaptation of the book. Sleepy Hollow was also a book. Burton did an adaptation. Is it so wrong to be inspired by a story one loves and make a piece of art out of it?
And another thing: there are people out there saying that The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride were the same. You are, in fact, mistaken again. Watch the movies again. They have completely different themes. Need help? Here, let me explain. Corpse Bride focused on accepting fate. Emily (the corpse bride) had her chance to marry. She tried to take it away from someone (Victoria) because she was so distraught about it. In the end, she realized her selfish ways, realized that she already had her chance, and let Victoria and Victor live their lives (they were also quite in love). On the other hand, The Nightmare Before Christmas, although Jack gets a little selfish as well and must realize the error of his ways and mend them, does not focus mostly on the love aspect. Sally and Jack realize they are perfect for each other because they both need each other. While both movies have a similar "realize the error, then fix it" idea to it, they are in no way the same. Again, watch them.
(Also, even though Henry Selik directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, it was Tim Burton's original characters and story. It was still his idea. There is also a book you could read the original poem in. Do some research, people. If you have time to make angry and ignorant comments about things you dislike, then you have time to look something up or actually read something for once in your life.)
I am very happy with how this movie is turning out. It resembles a lot of the original illustrations from the book - lots of little, intricate details, the fancy and eclectic Victorian clothing, and the overall atmosphere. I am pleased that Tim Burton will be drawing mainly from the novels and (of course) adding his own, unique twist to it.
Please, Tim Burton is not "gothic". I get filled with slight misanthropic rage when people lump things into categories that media and fashion have established for us and tell us is socially acceptable. Burton is just portrayed that way due to the commercialism of the paraphernalia from his movies, and Hot Topic (who will take anything and everything and make it "dark" and "scene" and market it to people who need to feel these things). What Tim Burton does is his own, unique style, which can be said for any director and/or artist. His works are not "gothic". They are simply the product of his imagination and style. Neither is he "dark". His works are about beauty and humanity, or what it is to be human; to feel, to love, to hate, to question. I suppose that humans are "dark" by nature, but now we're just arguing semantics. There is a lot of beauty to being human, and Tim Burton happens to focus on that aspect.
Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass has a lot of similar themes. I think Tim Burton will do wonders with this movie, especially since he is adapting it from the books. (Although he might do well to branch out a little bit with his casting choices. It wouldn't hurt to get some new blood in the future, as good as Johnny Depp and Helena Bohnam-Carter are.)
On another note, for those of you complaining that the posters on this page have no life, well, you don't have to read or post on this. If you don't like something, no one is forcing you to watch, read, or listen to it. You are doing it by choice and should not be condemning others for liking something, by choice, that you don't like. It's silly. In response to some comments about how dumb Tim Burton fans are: People dress a certain way, act a certain way by choice. If you don't want to be a part of it, don't. You can like something without getting involved in an aspect of it you do not like. And it certainly does not mean that you will get stereotyped with the rest. Why is it wrong if people just want to fit in somewhere, however sad it is? (Which also goes along with the comment I made about Hot Topic - it may have sounded crude, but I did not intend to make it sound as if I were ridiculing.) Everything anyone does is by choice.
Now, I think that this movie will turn out fine. It is in good hands, with a reliable cast, and a wonderfully creative mind behind it. If you don't like it or don't want to see it or whatever, don't. But I am very hopeful for this movie and am eagerly anticipating it's release. Go read the books - maybe things will begin to make sense.
Wow, a gothic movie done by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp? Who could do the soundtrack? Maybe Danny Elfman? I thought Mel Brooks reused the same people ad nauseum...sheesh!
Damn i want her coat. It's so cute. I can't wait for this to come out
This is my dream come true
you all try to make yourselfs sound bare smart
but your all on here arguin over shit that dont even matter
get a life
your alll very sadd
For Tanner and anonymous.
First Tanner RE: NMBX.
The amount of clothing, toys and articles related to this film are not in anyway Mr. Burton's fault. It is a Disney picture and Disney does like to flood the market with collectibles and the such when there is a demand for it. Yes, I am sure Burton get's a nice little commission but it is Disney that licenses the items out and then those companies make it. You can't condemn Burton for making a movie that has a particular audience or is that favorable among many.
Danny Elfman produced yet another great CD for this movie with Great artists, his second. Kudos.
I am sure that if there was an interest in Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs there would be stuff out there too.
As for anonymous. Great job in your statement regarding Charlie and Chocolate Factory. Dahl HATED the original although I like it very much. And anyone that disagrees with the fact about POTA and CCF read the books. The actual lyrics for the songs in CCF were written by Dahl, it's actually in the book and put to music by Elfman. As for POTA the ending is in the book. Although Markie Mark was a cardboard cutout it is too bad that Depp was not available.
The makeup was fantastic, the sets great and the story was legitimate. Roth was fantastic.
